The art of sewing was introduced to founder and maker, Maryke Jordaan, by her beloved grandmother Ouma Koekies (the family name is Koekemoer). Ouma Koekies made all her clothes herself and looked like she stepped out of a fashion magazine, even if she spent the day in the house baking or gardening.

When Ouma Koekies passed away in 2010, Maryke inherited her sewing machines and they were the first items packed when she left for varsity. Through the years working abroad there was not much time for sewing, and then the lockdown period dawned upon us. A combination of frustration, boredom and a love for sewing is what led to the birth of PIKO Baby Clothing in March 2020.

All the items are designed and made by Maryke from her home in Burgundy Estate, Cape Town. Currently items are mostly sold online through social media but keep a look out for news on which Christmas markets will stock PIKO Baby Clothing garments.

Words from the founder: “I do not make garments in advance at this stage as I still have a day job in the financial sector. All pieces are made on order. So, when you receive your package, know that for a couple of hours, your order was my main responsibility and received my uninterrupted attention. There is definitely still a lot to learn but this is a dream come true and would not be possible without you. The next goal is to appoint someone from our community to help a fellow neighbor that has been affected by the pandemic and also grow the business. I’m sure Ouma Koekies has a big smile on her face”
