Carrot & the Moon

My dream for carrot and the moon is to make things that are as beautiful inside as they are out. I’m striving for materials as all natural, ethical, local, eco friendly and sustainable as possible. It’s a big goal and even in my short time since starting this venture in September 2020 it has taken me on quite a journey!
My name is Amy and I am the hands behind “Carrot and the moon” hand crafted wool felt baby mobiles and nursery decor. My mom’s name holds a special place in the name of the business: Her name is Karin and we have a friend who’s little boy can’t pronounce it so he calls her “Carrot”: A name which just kind of stuck. I suppose my Mom would say I’m the Moon in the scenario as I’ve had many phases in my life.
Normally I’m an Airline pilot and some of my friends have been surprised at this seemingly random creative streak. But the truth is I’ve always been creative because Carrot taught me to craft and sew from a young age (and has already helped make many a pom pom for this venture!). When I found myself without work during the pandemic I thought I’d try my hand at making a couple of mobiles to pass the time. And the response has been humbling and incredible, from supportive customers to the many extremely talented makers out there, I’ve been blown away. I absolutely adore quirky secret details and I’ve tried to make each piece unique by adding special “Easter eggs” of intimate significance for the recipients: From their spirit animals to the constellations that will shine in the sky in the month of the baby’s due date, not a detail goes unconsidered.
This ethos of deliberate careful construction extends in to the materials and workmanship as well. I use 60-100% merino wool felt (much of it locally handmade)for longevity and softness and am striving toward entirely 100% all natural wool felt. There is not a single item on my mobiles which isn’t stitched. Even the tinies of flower petals may be attached with a drop of non-toxic hot glue, but each and every one is reinforced with a stitch. From a safety perspective I don’t ever want small parts to be able to drop off of the mobile near ones precious baby.
In addition to that I want my creations to last so that they may be more than just something for the first few months but an an heirloom and a keepsake from an incredibly special time in my recipients lives.
